About the Author

Writing from the intersection of healthcare, leadership, and human connection

Matthew C. Gee, MBA, is an accomplished healthcare executive and strategist whose career spans the full breadth of modern healthcare — clinical operations, behavioral health strategy, workforce development, organizational leadership, and community engagement. With deep, cross-disciplinary experience across multiple specialties and healthcare environments, he brings a perspective few authors can offer: one forged not in theory, but on the front lines of some of the most complex challenges facing healthcare organizations today.

Roots Before Branches grew from a conviction that the biggest challenges facing clinicians, leaders, parents, and educators are not isolated problems, but interconnected consequences of the same imbalance. Modern society, Matthew observed, has become extraordinarily skilled at growing its “branches” — technology, speed, scale, and innovation — while neglecting the “roots” that sustain healthy human development: presence, family, community, resilience, mentorship, and meaningful connection.

His work bridges three worlds most authors treat separately — healthcare leadership, child development, and social commentary — into a single unifying argument that speaks to professionals and families alike. He is driven by a deeply held belief that the future of healthcare, and of society at large, will belong to those who can build systems large enough to scale while remaining human enough to heal.

Three books, one shared conviction

Across genres and audiences, each book returns to the same belief: that connection — to ourselves, to each other, and to what we believe — is the foundation everything else is built on.

The Roots Before Branches Series — Book One

Roots Before Branches

Reestablishing Connection in Healthcare, Leadership, and Society

We have never been more connected, yet loneliness, burnout, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion continue to rise. Something essential is being lost, and you can feel it.

In Roots Before Branches, Matthew C. Gee explores the deeper patterns beneath the crises overwhelming healthcare systems, workplaces, families, schools, and communities. The behavioral health challenges flooding emergency departments, the workforce instability draining organizations, the emotional fragmentation quietly reshaping childhood development — these are not separate problems. They are signals of a society slowly drifting from the foundational human connections that once built resilience, accountability, empathy, and belonging.

Drawing on years of experience in healthcare operations, behavioral health strategy, workforce development, and community engagement, Gee writes from the intersection where institutional pressure meets human reality — and makes the case that rebuilding connection is the most urgent leadership challenge of our time.

The God Who Sees

Recovering Our Sight in a World That Has Stopped Looking

In a world increasingly defined by distraction, noise, and curated surfaces, we have quietly lost the art of truly seeing — seeing those around us, seeing ourselves, and seeing the God who has never stopped looking at us.

The God Who Sees is Matthew C. Gee's most personal book yet: a meditation on presence, faith, and what it means to live with your eyes — and your heart — genuinely open. Drawing on scripture, personal experience, and the same themes of disconnection that run through his earlier work, Matthew invites readers to recover a way of moving through the world that is slower, more attentive, and more deeply human.

For anyone who has felt unseen, anyone who has stopped looking, and anyone searching for a faith that meets them where they actually are.

Speaking & Engagements

Bringing Roots Before Branches to your stage, team, or organization

Matthew speaks to healthcare systems, leadership teams, conferences, and community organizations about the same throughline that runs through his book: that the crises we treat as separate — burnout, behavioral health strain, disconnection, and instability — share a common root, and a common path forward.

  • 01 Roots Before Branches: A Framework for Reconnection The central framework from Matthew's book — why organizations and communities must strengthen their roots before they can sustainably grow their branches.
  • 02 Beyond Burnout: Rebuilding Resilience in Healthcare Teams Practical, leadership-level strategies for addressing workforce instability and emotional exhaustion at their source, not just their symptoms.
  • 03 Why Healthcare Can't Solve What Communities Stop Cultivating A candid look at how upstream forces in families, schools, and communities shape the downstream crises healthcare systems are left to absorb.
  • 04 Leading Behavioral Health Transformation in a Disconnected Age Lessons from the front lines of behavioral health strategy on building systems that are large enough to scale and human enough to heal.
  • 05 Community Engagement as a Leadership Strategy Why the future of healthcare leadership depends on genuine partnership with families, educators, and local organizations — not just operational excellence.
